Early in the morning, we depart from Palotoa Amazon Lodge and begin an approximately four-hour motorized boat journey along the Madre de Dios River. During the ride, you will enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast on board, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Amazon rainforest. As we continue, the clear waters of the Madre de Dios gradually give way to the distinctive clay-colored waters of the Manu River, marking our entrance into one of the most remote areas of the park.
We make a short stop at the Limonal Control Point, where our official permits are checked by park rangers. After a brief orientation, we navigate the Manu River for about five hours, offering excellent opportunities for Amazon wildlife viewing. Along the riverbanks, you can observe nesting birds, herons, Orinoco egrets, and feeding egrets, as well as white and black caimans.
This stretch of the river is also known for sightings of sandy-colored nightjars, often resting on logs and beaches, and occasional jaguar sightings. The surrounding forest is home to red howler monkeys and squirrel monkeys. Lunch is served on the boat, allowing you to dine in the heart of the lowland rainforest.
In the afternoon, we arrive at Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, located on the banks of the Manu River and operated by the Matsiguenka indigenous community. The area features several well-maintained jungle trails, where your guide will provide insightful interpretation about the local ecosystem and culture.
Later, we explore nearby rainforest trails before visiting Cocha Otorongo Lake, home to a 20-meter canopy observation tower. From the treetops, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the lake and surrounding wildlife, with a chance to spot giant river otters.
After returning to the lodge for dinner, you may opt for a night jungle excursion by boat, an excellent opportunity to observe nocturnal wildlife such as black caimans, olingos, ocelots, and other Amazon species.
Following this immersive day in the Manu lowland rainforest, we return to the lodge to rest and spend our second night deep in the Amazon.
