Five-Day Manu Reserved Zone Tour – Amazon Rainforest Adventure

Our 5-day Manu Reserved Zone tour immerses you in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. Covering more than 1.5 million hectares, Manu National Park is the largest protected rainforest area in the region and a must-visit destination for nature and wildlife lovers.

Located near Cusco, the main gateway to Machu Picchu, the Manu Reserved Zone is among the most popular areas of the Peruvian Amazon thanks to its extraordinary richness of flora and fauna. The Amazon here extends from 290 meters to over 4,200 meters above sea level, creating a unique range of ecosystems from lowland jungle to Andean cloud forests.

Manu National Park is divided into three areas: the Core Zone, the Reserved Zone, and the Cultural Zone. While the Core Zone is restricted to researchers, the Reserved Zone allows visitors to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site (designated in 1987) through responsible ecotourism.

During this five-day Manu Reserved Zone expedition, guided by our experienced local team, you will enjoy unforgettable activities such as wildlife observation, birdwatching, night safaris, jungle survival lessons, and possible jaguar sightings.

We are a family-owned eco-tourism company based in Palotoa, deep in the Manu rainforest. Our local guides bring unmatched knowledge of Amazonian wildlife, indigenous culture, and traditional practices.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco to Manu Reserved Zone – Andes to Amazon Journey

On the first day of our Manu Reserved Zone tour, we depart very early in the morning, around 4:00 AM, with hotel pickup in Cusco. Traveling in our private tourist vehicle, we begin an unforgettable journey from the Andes Mountains to the Amazon rainforest, making several scenic and cultural stops along the way.

Our first stop is Paucartambo, a traditional Andean town known for preserving its ancestral customs. Here, many locals still speak Quechua, offering a glimpse into authentic Andean culture.

We then continue to the Acjanaco Pass, the official entrance to Manu National Park, where you will enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Amazon Basin. From this point, we descend into the lush cloud forest, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the region.

During a short stop in the cloud forest, you may spot the Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru’s national bird, as well as various wildlife species, including woolly monkeys and other primates. After taking in the first impressive views of the Andean and Amazon landscapes, we continue toward the port of Atalaya, passing through small rural and farming communities.

At Atalaya, we switch to river transport and begin a two-hour motorized boat journey along the Madre de Dios River, heading deep into the jungle. Upon arrival at our Amazon rainforest lodge, you will settle into a comfortable cabin with a private bathroom, surrounded by the natural sounds of the rainforest.

In the evening, our team will welcome you with a delicious traditional dinner, marking your first night immersed in the heart of the Amazon.

Day 2Deep into the Manu Reserved Zone – River Wildlife & Rainforest Exploration

Early in the morning, we depart from Palotoa Amazon Lodge and begin an approximately four-hour motorized boat journey along the Madre de Dios River. During the ride, you will enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast on board, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Amazon rainforest. As we continue, the clear waters of the Madre de Dios gradually give way to the distinctive clay-colored waters of the Manu River, marking our entrance into one of the most remote areas of the park.

We make a short stop at the Limonal Control Point, where our official permits are checked by park rangers. After a brief orientation, we navigate the Manu River for about five hours, offering excellent opportunities for Amazon wildlife viewing. Along the riverbanks, you can observe nesting birds, herons, Orinoco egrets, and feeding egrets, as well as white and black caimans.

This stretch of the river is also known for sightings of sandy-colored nightjars, often resting on logs and beaches, and occasional jaguar sightings. The surrounding forest is home to red howler monkeys and squirrel monkeys. Lunch is served on the boat, allowing you to dine in the heart of the lowland rainforest.

In the afternoon, we arrive at Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, located on the banks of the Manu River and operated by the Matsiguenka indigenous community. The area features several well-maintained jungle trails, where your guide will provide insightful interpretation about the local ecosystem and culture.

Later, we explore nearby rainforest trails before visiting Cocha Otorongo Lake, home to a 20-meter canopy observation tower. From the treetops, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the lake and surrounding wildlife, with a chance to spot giant river otters.

After returning to the lodge for dinner, you may opt for a night jungle excursion by boat, an excellent opportunity to observe nocturnal wildlife such as black caimans, olingos, ocelots, and other Amazon species.

Following this immersive day in the Manu lowland rainforest, we return to the lodge to rest and spend our second night deep in the Amazon.

Day 3Cocha Salvador & Macaw Clay Lick – Wildlife Encounters in Manu

We begin the day with a traditional Amazonian breakfast before heading to Cocha Salvador, one of the most important oxbow lakes in the Manu Reserved Zone. Throughout the morning, we explore the lake by canoe, allowing close and silent observation of the abundant wildlife that inhabits this pristine ecosystem. From specially built platforms extending over the water, you’ll have excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting.

At Cocha Salvador, you may observe rare bird species such as the Agami heron and sungrebe, as well as brown capuchin monkeys and other mammals. The lake is especially famous for its resident families of giant river otters, the largest freshwater carnivores in the world. These impressive animals consume up to 4–5 kilograms of fish per day and are often seen feeding along the lakeshore.

After our time at the lake, we spend the rest of the day hiking through primary rainforest trails, searching for the thirteen iconic species of monkeys found in the region. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to a variety of medicinal plants traditionally used by indigenous communities.

Later in the afternoon, we take part in one of the most spectacular experiences in the Amazon: visiting a macaw clay lick. From a hidden observation shelter, we spend approximately two hours watching colorful parrots and macaws gather on the river cliff to feed on mineral-rich clay—an unforgettable experience, especially for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers.

During the return hike, we may encounter groups of peccaries, a species of New World wild pigs that roam the forest in herds. As the day comes to an end, we enjoy a beautiful Amazon sunset before returning to Casa Matsiguenka Lodge for dinner and overnight accommodation.

Day 4Rivers of Manu to Palotoa Amazon Lodge – Wildlife & Night Jungle Walk

After breakfast, we check out from Casa Matsiguenka Lodge and begin a four-hour boat journey down the Boca Manu River. Along the riverbanks, there are frequent opportunities to observe a wide variety of Amazon wildlife, as many animals gather near the shores to feed and rest.

During the journey, we make a stop at Lake Brasco, a biodiversity-rich oxbow lake known for attracting numerous bird and mammal species. Here, you’ll have the chance to spot more animals in their natural rainforest habitat, making it an excellent location for wildlife observation and photography.

We then continue downstream along the Madre de Dios River for approximately five hours, eventually arriving at our Palotoa Amazon Lodge, located deep within the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. Surrounded by untouched jungle, the lodge’s strategic location makes it a favorite base for birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts, and conservation groups exploring the Manu region.

After settling in and enjoying dinner, we head out on a guided night walk, an exciting opportunity to search for nocturnal Amazon creatures such as insects, frogs, reptiles, and night-active mammals. This immersive experience concludes our day, as we return to the lodge to rest amid the sounds of the rainforest.

Day 5Return from the Amazon to Cusco

On the final day of your Manu Reserved Zone adventure, we wake up early to enjoy a delicious breakfast at the lodge. After breakfast, you’ll have time to pack your belongings and prepare for the return journey.

We then travel by motorized boat to the port of Atalaya, where our private vehicle will be waiting to begin the scenic drive back to Cusco. Along the route, we make a stop to enjoy our final lunch, reflecting on the unforgettable experiences in the Amazon rainforest.

We arrive in Cusco in the afternoon, around 5:00 PM, and provide a drop-off at your hotel or any preferred location within the city, marking the end of your incredible journey through the Manu National Park and the Peruvian Amazon.
