We will commence our journey at 4:00 am, departing on a private bus bound for “Mollepata,” a quaint village situated at an elevation of 2,850 meters. This region boasts a pleasant climate, lush jungle foliage, and offers breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks belonging to the Salkantay mountain range, which reach heights of 4,000 – 5,000 meters.
Our estimated arrival time in Mollepata is around 7:00 am, where we will have the opportunity to appreciate this captivating scenery, which forms part of the majestic Salkantay mountain with its towering summit standing at 6,200 meters. Optional breakfast will be available, allowing us to savor the landscape before embarking on our trek, which is expected to last approximately 7-8 hours.
As we make our way through the jungle vegetation, we will pause for lunch along the route before continuing our expedition until we reach our first campsite in Soraypampa.
The following day will encompass our most extensive hike. Following breakfast, we will embark on a trek that involves a moderate uphill climb lasting approximately two hours, culminating at the renowned “Salkantay Pass” (4,600 m. / 9,800 ft).
At this juncture, we will pay homage to the mountains by leaving a small offering and capturing a collective photograph against the backdrop of the snow-capped Salkantay peak. Subsequently, we will commence a descent lasting two hours until we reach our lunch spot in Huayracmachay.
Following a brief respite, we will resume our journey, descending further into the jungle. After approximately two hours of hiking, we will arrive at Chaullay, where we will spend the night.
Following a 06:30 am breakfast, we will commence our journey through the upper reaches of the rainforest, traversing the Lluskamayo River and a multitude of small streams. Along the way, we will encounter breathtaking valleys adorned with captivating waterfalls, as well as an assortment of tropical flora and fruits.
Of particular note are the various species of coca, revered as the sacred leaf of the Inca Empire’s ancestors, which thrive in these tropical regions. The final leg of our trek will consist of a downward descent towards “Playa Sahuayaco” and subsequently lead us to Santa Teresa, where we will spend the night.
In a picturesque tropical setting abundant with nature and historical significance, we will witness the sunrise. Following this captivating experience, a delightful breakfast awaits us before we resume our journey towards Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Village.
The duration of this leg of the trek is estimated to be approximately 7 hours, during which we will pass through the renowned rest stop of Hydroelectric (optional hydro service station – Aguas Calientes).
Along the way, we will make several stops to fully immerse ourselves in the breathtaking scenery, characterized by cascading waterfalls originating from the glaciers.
By late afternoon, we will arrive at the charming village of Aguas Calientes, nestled at the foot of the majestic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, where we will spend the night in a cozy hostel.
In the early morning, approximately at 4:30 a.m., we will embark on the ascent to the awe-inspiring Inca city of Machu Picchu. Accompanied by our knowledgeable guide, we will explore the citadel for approximately 2 hours, immersing ourselves in its fascinating history and architectural marvels.
The remainder of the day will be free for you to explore at your own pace. You may choose to visit Huayna Picchu (optional), Inti Punku, Temple of the Moon, or simply revisit the citadel to soak in its beauty once again.
In the afternoon, we will return to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Village) based on the schedule of our return train, which will be communicated to you upon booking your trip with our company. From Aguas Calientes, we will be transferred to Ollantaytambo, the imperial city of Cusco.
Please note that if you are interested in including a visit to Huayna Picchu in your Machu Picchu experience, there are new regulations in place, and the permits must be purchased in advance. The cost of the entrance to Machu Picchu, including the climb to Huayna Picchu, is an additional USD 10.00. Kindly indicate your preference in the comment box on the booking form if you wish to include Huayna Picchu in your itinerary.
While it is possible to trek independently, it is highly recommended to hire a knowledgeable guide or join a guided tour for the Salkantay Trek. Guides provide valuable information about the route, ensure your safety, and handle logistics, allowing you to fully enjoy the experience.
Some campsites along the Salkantay Trek offer basic shower facilities, but they may have limited availability or require an additional fee. It is advisable to bring wet wipes or other personal hygiene products for convenience.
It is recommended to bring a water purification system or water purification tablets to ensure safe drinking water during the trek. Your tour operator will also provide boiled water for refilling your bottles.
Yes, during the Salkantay Trek, you will be provided with meals and camping equipment by your tour operator. They will set up campsites along the route and ensure you have hot meals to fuel your trekking adventure.
